Unhappy with vendor at Columbiana Street Fair

To the editor: I was deeply upset, and quite disappointed to see a bumper sticker for sale by a vendor at the Columbiana Street Fair with a vulgarity toward President Biden. The Columbiana Street Fair is a treasured community tradition enjoyed by families from far and wide. It saddens me to see such vulgarity on display for everyone to see, from young children to their grandmothers, walking the midway. I feel that it is extremely poor judgment to allow such a thing to be offered for sale at an event like this. I’m ashamed for anyone to come to our great town —“The Nicest ...

Am I a threat to Democracy?

To the editor: I had no intentions of writing anything on this year’s 9-11 anniversary. But on August 24 — Cathy’s birthday — I got to thinking: did they die in vain? I never really gave the idea much thought. But over the years I’ve watched the country they died for quickly disappear! In 2016, Donald Trump was elected president. But even before he was sworn in as president Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and the news media crucified him. They were determined to impeach him. But could not. It was a witch hunt that should have never been allowed. They trampled on the ...

Men’s Rally in the Valley spirit lives on

To the editor: Greetings from Men of Faith. If you are familiar with the Men’s Rally in the Valley you know that we suffered a devastating blow just three months prior to the last Rally. The loss of our President, Bing Newton, put the whole organization into a tail spin. As an organization we were in conflict. “But God” the theme for the 2022 Rally took on a whole new meaning for those of us who depended on Bing’s direction. As I look back at just the last few years, I’m reminded of just how relevant the rally has been. In 2019 when we produced “An Anchor in the Storm.” ...

Community members fighting proposed solar project

To the editor: We in Franklin Township are, involuntarily, in the fight for our livelihood and way of life. A massive industrial-sized solar project is threatening to engulf 2,264 acres of our beautiful township. Three non-resident landowners (and one landowner with no panels planned near their residence) have signed 35-year leases with a Canadian company to occupy farmland with solar panels. These panels will cover about 900 football fields worth of our hilly landscape. The project will be in the vicinity of three churches, two cemeteries, and encompass the villages of Milport and ...

Encouraging others to help out in communities

To the editor: “Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve.” You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You only need a big heart. I would like to encourage our youth, our younger generations, the Millennials, and Gen Zers, to step up and serve your community. Whether it’’s helping out at the Banquet of Salem, mowing and trimming the hedges at church, or helping a neighbor out. Youth committing themselves to civic life, and creating a fairer, more just, and more peaceful world. Devoting yourselves to the service of others, and you will get a big lift that ...
