Clippers welcome six into HOF

COLUMBIANA — Columbiana High School enshrined six new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 11 , recognizing achievements across multiple sports and decades of service to the community.

The 2024 class includes five standout athletes and one individual honored for meritorious service.

The inductees are:

JOEY WINTERS

(Class of 2007)

A three-sport athlete, Winters was a force on the football field, earning 2nd Team All-Ohio honors as a running back. He had two 1,000-yard rushing seasons, finished his career with 40 total touchdowns, and was the first Columbiana player selected for the North-South All-Star Game. In basketball, he was a leading rebounder and played in the Columbiana County All-Star Classic. He also lettered four years in track and field, winning shotput and discus at the first Inter-Tri County League Championship Meet. After high school, he played football at Washington & Jefferson College and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, where he continues to serve. He lives in Clovis, New Mexico, with his wife and two children.

CHRISTOPHER

ESENWEIN

(Class of 1997)

Esenwein was a dominant baseball player for the Clippers, earning first-team All-Ohio honors in Division III for three consecutive years. A unanimous All-Tri-County League selection as a pitcher and infielder all three of his varsity seasons, he helped lead Columbiana to a No. 2 state ranking and three straight Tri-County League championships, including an undefeated league title in 1996. He was also named the Heritage Player of the Year as a sophomore and earned Mizuno All-Ohio All-Star honors as a senior.

DAREK STANFIELD (Class of 2001)

Stanfield established himself as one of the most accomplished baseball players in school history, setting records for single-season ERA (0.40) and career ERA (1.01) that still stand. As a senior, he was named Division III All-Ohio as a catcher and was selected to multiple all-star teams, including the Mizuno All-Ohio squad. He continued his career at the University of Akron, where he transitioned to a closing pitcher and set the school’s single-season and career saves records, earning All-MAC honors twice. Now a doctor of chiropractic, he works in intraoperative neuromonitoring and lives in Wadsworth with his family.

STEPHANIE CASE DUDA

(Class of 2009)

Duda was a multi-sport star in cross country, track, and swimming. In cross country, she was the first female in school history to qualify for the state meet and led her team to its first state appearance as a senior, earning All-Ohio honors. In track, she was the Columbiana County Athlete of the Year, broke the league 800-meter record, and qualified for state in the 1600 and 3200. She also broke nearly every school swimming record. She competed in cross country and track at Slippery Rock University, where she was a national qualifier and a two-time PSAC champion in the 10,000 meters. Now a physician assistant, she lives in Boardman and competes in triathlons for Team USA.

SEAN ZENTNER (Class of 1983) –

Meritorious Service

Zentner is recognized for his decades of dedication to Columbiana athletics as an athlete and a booster. As a student, he was a multi-sport athlete, earning football MVP and All-County honors as a co-captain his senior year, and was a district qualifier in wrestling. His service includes six years as vice president of Columbiana Youth Baseball, four years as president of Little Clipper Football, and eight years with the Columbiana Athletic Boosters, serving two years as vice president and six as president. During his tenure, the Boosters achieved financial stability and played a key role in fundraising for the $1.8 million Fisher Stadium at Harvey Firestone Park.

MACKIE McGARRY (Class of 2007)

McGarry was a standout linebacker for the Clippers, earning first-team all-conference and all-county honors multiple times and twice receiving honorable mention All-Ohio. He held the school’s career tackle record with 412 until 2023. He also was a member of the 1600-meter relay team that qualified for regionals in track and was an undefeated middleweight boxer in K.O. Boxing tournaments. He continues to reside in Columbiana and works for a local landscaping company.
