EOAC champions exit in the first round
LISBON — It wasn’t a good day for the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference boys basketball champions on Thursday.
Both Lisbon and Columbiana saw their seasons come to an end in the Div. VI sectional opener.
No. 7 seed Lisbon fell behind by 19 at the half, but climbed to within one point with 12 seconds to play against No. 16 Springfield, but the Tigers picked up a key offensive rebound off a free throw attempt in the final seconds and converted it for two to come away with a 71-67 win.
Lisbon dropped its seventh straight tournament game and ended the season 16-7. Springfield, who finished in fourth place in the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Scarlet Division, is 13-10 and will play at Cuyahoga Heights on Monday in the district semifinal.
Columbiana, the EOAC co-champ, was also eliminated by Campbell 56-55 at home.
Lisbon senior AJ Ramgeet finished his high school career with 1,592 points and the school is recognizing him as its all-time leading scorer having passed Justin Sweeney’s total of 1,581. Ramgeet scored 600 points in two seasons at Oak Glen before coming to Lisbon. Lisbon is also recognizing Ramgeet as its all-time free throw makes leader with 298 having broke Sweeney’s mark of 271.
After his 31-point night against the Tigers, Ramgeet broke the Lisbon mark for field goals in a season with 221. Sweeney set the previous mark with 215. Ramgeet also had five assists against the Tigers.
Five Springfield players scorer in double figures with Landon Dyer and Matt Wymer each scoring 15.
Also for Lisbon, Aidan Ramgeet had 19 points and three steals. Blaine Barnes added 11 points and four steals.

COLUMBIANA — Having suffered a 40-point loss to Campbell in last season’s tournament, Columbiana thought it might have a better chance against the Red Devils this season.
It was better but it wasn’t enough.
The No. 15 seed Red Devils earned a 56-55 win over the No. 8 seed Clippers to advance on Thursday in Div. VI sectional play.
Keniel Alvarez led the winners with 16 points, while Sawaun Johnson added 13 points.
For Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference co-champs Columbiana, Cooper Brown had 18 points.
Columbiana led 31-22 at the half and 44-41 at the end of the third quarter.
Campbell will host Andrews Osbourne Academy on Monday in the district semifinal. The Phoenix upset No. 4 seed Brookfield 74-47 on Thursday.

Heartland 77, Lordstown 29
COLUMBIANA — Heartland Christian’s boys basketball team had a 34-point first quarter and cruised to a 77-29 win over 23rd-seeded Lordstown in a Div. VII sectional final Thursday.
Collin Kalaher scored 14 points in the opening quarter as the Lions took a commanding 34-10 lead. Kalaher scored 25 of his game-high 27 points in the first half.
Isaiah Matthews and Jack Morgan added 11 points apiece. Brody Conaway and Reagan Kalaher each had nine points.
The Lions, the third seed, will host No. 14 seed Cornerstone Christian at 7 p.m. Monday in the district semifinal. Cornerstone was a state finalist last season.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 4 seed Western Reserve will host No. 7 seed Kidron Central Christian.
Lordstown finished with a 5-18 record.

Smithville 78, Southern 25
SMITHVILLE — No. 30 seed Southern Local exited the Div. VI sectional tournament with a 78-25 loss to No. 3 seed Smithville on Thursday.
The Indians ended their season 3-20. Smithville is 18-5 and will host No. 21 seed United on Monday in the district semifinal.
For the Indians, Jack Pitts led with eight points.

LOUISVILLE — Gianni Ashcraft and Joran Jones had 21 points each to lead No. 22 seed St. Thomas Aquinas to a 90-49 win over No. 25 seed East Palestine on Thursday in a Div. VI sectional contest.
St. Thomas (9-13) will travel to top seed Kirtland on Monday in the district semifinal.
For East Palestine (6-16), Drew Bycroft had 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. RJ May added 14 points, four assists and three steals. Kealin Simon had 11 points. Clark Rutledge had eight points, three rebounds and two assists.

KINSMAN — No. 12 seed Badger eliminated No. 19 seed Leetonia 55-44 Thursday in a Div. VII sectional game.
Leetonia ended its season 6-17. Badger is 13-10 and will go to No. 1 McDonald on Monday in the district semifinal.
