Southern Local tested in OVAC semifinal

SALINEVILLE—Having played just four opponents with records over .500 this season, Southern Local’s girls basketball team was in need of a challenge. It got just that when Shadyside pushed the Indians in a hotly contested Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Class 2A semifinal on Monday. Led by freshman Katie Kellogg’s 31 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists, Southern survived to advance to its first OVAC final with a 68-58 victory over the Tigers. Rebels get the best of Lowellville STRUTHERS — The Crestview bowling teams topped Lowellville at the Holiday Bowl on Monday. The Crestview boys won, 2189-2061, as Peyton Mellott rolled a 397 series. Brody Brubaker had a 208 game and 381 series. Chris Johnson added a 333 series and Milton Scott a 290 series. For Lowellville, Cooper Jones had a 353 series and Levi Moore a 350 series. Branch gets two EOWL titles

AUSTINTOWN — Nationally ranked Jake Hughes of Beaver Local swept through his matches on Friday and Saturday to earn the most valuable wrestler award at the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League tournament at Austintown Fitch. Hughes had three quick pins and an a technical fall to win at 157 pounds for his second career EOWL crown. The sophomore improved to 29-3 on the season as he defeated Southern Local’s Rowan Wiley by pin in 1:15 in the final. Hughes is ranked 15th in the nation at 157 pounds by FloWrestling. Holtz enters hospice care

College Football Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz has entered hospice care his family announced on Thursday. The 1954 East Liverpool High School graduate had given what he called his last public speech on Nov. 20 and celebrated his 89th birthday on Jan. 6. Holtz is most well known for leading the Notre Dame Fighting Irish from 1986 to 1996 in addition to being a college football television personality. Holtz has had health concerns in recent years but his family did not specify what was ailing him.

Beavers advance eight to semifinals AUSTINTOWN — Beaver Local’s wrestling team advanced eight to the semifinals of the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League tournament on Friday at Austintown Fitch. Beaver Local freshman Jordan Bates (23-2) will meet Brookfield’s Brayden Reed (1-0)in a 106-pound semifinal. Beaver sophomore John Burkett (16-8) advanced to the semifinals at 120 and will meet Hubbard’s Logan Balla (30-5) in a semifinal. Quakers suffer another road loss in EBC play

ALLIANCE — Marlington outscored Salem 22-1 in the fourth quarter for a 71-51 Eastern Buckeye Conference win Friday. Salem took a 38-30 lead at halftime and a 50-49 lead through three quarters before the Dukes rallied. Marlington snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 4-11 overall and 2-5 in the EBC, while Salem drops to 3-11 and 0-8 in the EBC. Cameron Evanich topped the Dukes with a game-high 20 points.
