Woman enters guilty plea in fatal hit and skip

LISBON — A Salem woman entered a guilty plea Monday to failing to stop after an accident, exactly two years to the day that the truck she was driving struck pedestrian Brandy Lynn Lasky, who then died.

Patricia Lynn Phillips, 30, Vine Street, had been scheduled to appear in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court for a status hearing, but instead opted to plead guilty to the third-degree felony.

She had been indicted last year for allegedly failing to immediately stop after striking 46-year-old Brandy Lynn Lasky on state Route 344 on March 11, 2022. Lasky died while walking in the westbound lane of the road after midnight. Patricia Phillips allegedly left the scene. Lasky was found unresponsive with a head wound and died.

According to the indictment, Patricia Phillips was operating a 2005 Ford F-350 registered to Brandon Seddon when the accident occurred.

Judge Scott Washam set sentencing for 2 p.m. June 4. Defense attorney Lynn Maro told the judge the two sides had been negotiating and the case was resolved, but there was no plea agreement in place. The two sides will discuss their sentencing recommendations during the sentencing.

County Assistant Prosecutor Steve Yacovone, who was accompanied by county Assistant Prosecutor Tammie Riley Jones, said family members of the victim had been kept informed and said “they do approve of the resolution.”

While going over everything for the plea, Washam noted the charge against Patricia Phillips carries a possible penalty of a minimum nine months to a maximum 36 months in prison and a possible driver’s license suspension of six months to three years. There’s also a possibility for community control.

Patricia Phillips’ sister, 31-year-old Brandy Phillips, also of Salem, was ordered to serve three days in jail, with credit for one day served after being placed under community control for three years during her sentencing last month for obstructing justice related to the accident.

She was a passenger in the truck driven by Patricia Phillips and lied to investigators regarding the accident that resulted in Lasky’s death. She apologized to the family of the victim for their loss. She entered a guilty plea in January.
