Salem utilities department approves new union agreement

SALEM — The utilities commission approved a new contract with the union representing department employees in its meeting Sept. 17. The commissioners unanimously approved a new collective bargaining agreement with Utilities Workers Union of America AFL/CIO Local 560, the union which represents the city’s utilities workers. The contract was previously approved by the city council in its Sept. 15 meeting, leaving the commissioners to grant approval on behalf of the department itself, which operates as a semi-autonomous entity with its own governing board and budget. County health district issues reminder of scrap tire collection

LISBON — The Columbiana County Health District is reminding residents the district will host a free scrap tire collection event from 9 a.m. to noon on Oct. 3 at the Columbiana County fairgrounds. The collection guidelines include a limit of 10 tires per person, tires must be off of the rim and only passenger car and light truck tires will be accepted. United Local receives $110K for band trip to Pearl Harbor

HANOVERTON — The United Local School District has received $110,000 in donations to help cover the cost of the band’s performance at Pearl Harbor in December. It was first announced in May of this year that the marching band would be participating in the 85th Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade on Dec. 7. At that time funds were donated by local veterans organizations in support of the trip that will honor the lives of those lost in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Salem Fire Department responds to kitchen fire Monday

SALEM — A Salem business experienced a kitchen fire Monday. A structure fire was reported at the Foundry at 7:18 p.m. When firefighters arrived, smoke was visible from the rear of the building and employees of the business advised them that the fire was in the kitchen. Salem Fire Department Capt. Jeff Olinger said that fire was located on a stove top and appeared to have been started by items on the stove top overheating when someone accidentally turned on the wrong burner while attempting to heat something.
