Staff Writer LISBON — A judge scheduled a damages hearing at 11:30 a.m. June 5 for the default judgment issued in favor of Heggy’s in Salem against the contractor who caused damage to the restaurant while demolishing the former Schory building in downtown Salem in 2024. Woman continues appeals of sex-for-hire conviction

LISBON — A woman convicted in a sex-for-hire sting in 2024 filed another appeal trying to challenge her case, this time appealing the denial of her request for post-conviction relief. Shanika Simmons, 42, whose address was listed as the prison in Marysville, filed the handwritten document herself with the Seventh District Court of Appeals to appeal the March 27 judgment issued by Columbiana County Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Washam. Salem emergency crews rescue man trapped under tree

SALEM, (WKBN) — Crews from Salem police and fire departments rescued a man Monday who was trapped after a tree fell on him while he was operating a tractor. Emergency crews were called to the 2400 block of Edgewood Drive shortly before noon on Monday for a medical call stating a tree had fallen and pinned a man on a tractor. Salem fire Chief Scott Mason said it appeared the man was operating a tractor with a front-end loader to push a tree into a tree line when part of the tree snapped, pinning the man between the tree and the roll bar/seat area. Elections official expects 20% turnout

LISBON — Columbiana County Board of Elections Director Kim Fusco said she’s predicting a voter turnout of 20% for today’s election. Board members for the county Board of Elections met Monday to finalize plans for the primary election, allocating at least 29,200 printed ballots and allocating voting machines for all 73 precincts, with some polling locations serving more than one precinct. Jury trial set for Salem man accused of vehicular homicide

LISBON — A Salem man accused of causing the deaths of an elderly Salem couple in 2024 after allegedly falling asleep at the wheel is scheduled to face a jury trial Aug. 6. Kaylan Latrae Jones, 26, Georgetown Road, appeared in Columbiana County Municipal Court for a pretrial Monday before Judge Tim McNicol.
