United Local High School honors top students

HANOVERTON — The 45h annual Honors Banquet was held on May 9 at United High School. The featured speaker was RuthAnn Rinto who has been very active in the United community serving as elementary principal, high school principal, superintendent and now as a member of the school board.
Superintendent Lance Hostetler presented the top 10 students for the Class of 2018. The valedictorian is Hannah Richey and salutatorian is Destini Thompson. Others of the top 10 in order are Anna Paterson, Katelyn Maze, Sydney Marra, Jasmine Peuterbaugh, Emily Crawford, Mitchell Kelly, Camryn Jarrett and Jonathan Logan.
Dr. William Young, high school principal, introduced members of the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. Senior members are Jakob Althouse, Becky Bernet, Megan Brewer, Emily Crawford, Paige Fillman, Mollieann Fox, Camryn Jarrett, Lacey Jones, Mitchell Kelly, Brian Lippiatt, Jonathan Logan, Grace Maroscher, Sydney Marra, Katelyn Maze, Samantha Moschgat, Anna Paterson, Jasmine Peuterbaugh, Hannah Richey, Dustin Sanor, Daniel Shepard, Mackenzie Steele, Destini Thompson, Cassidy Varagliotti and Nichole Wagmiller. Junior members are April Clark, Matthew Courtney, Megan Drake, Hunter Ferry, Daniel Frase, Alyssa Inman, Jacob Scott King, Heather Lake, Samantha May, Wade McCoy, Jacey Menough, Olivia Miller, Nathan Pytash, Olivia Rieck, Kaylie Shinn, Daniel Smith, Morgan Todd, Jessica Tomlinson, Rhys Ward, Kylie Youst and Allison Zepernick.
Samantha Muniz then presented students who had earned inclusion on the 3.5 Distinguished Honor Roll during two of the first three grading periods of the year. Scholarships, for seniors planning to further their education have become a major feature of the program. Muniz started the evening off by presenting two scholarships from DeBartolo Corporation. Becky Bernet and Erica Jensen each received a $7,000 Scholarship. Bernet is the daughter of Dave and June Bernet of Hanoverton. She plans to study agricultural communications at The Ohio State University ATI. Jensen is the daughter of Valerie Jensen of Hanoverton and plans to attend the University of Akron to study radiologic technology.
Muniz then presented two Columbiana County Retired Teacher Association Book Grants of $500 to Mollieann Fox and Trinity Walker. Fox is the daughter of James Fox and Toni Donnelly of North Georgetown and will study education at Youngstown State University (YSU). Walker is the daughter of Georgie Arkwright and David Walker. She will study early childhood education at Kent State University (KSU) Salem campus.
Muniz presented Cade Wood with a $450 Citizenship Award in honor of Reed Votaw who was a former principal and assistant principal at United. Wood is the son of Chad and Sara Wood of Salem. He will study exercise science at KSU.
Muniz presented the $500 United Little Eagles Scholarships to Bernet and Wood.
Robert McCulloch of the Pearce Foundation presented its scholarship for $5,000, renewable for one year, to Samantha Moschgat, daughter of Toni Martin of Hanoverton. She will attend KSU Salem campus to study diagnostic medical sonography.
Four Alice Clewell Memorial Scholarships of $500 were presented by Judy Gamble and Julee Kelly to Jakob Althouse, Tori Hahlen, Mitchell Kelly and Wood. Althouse is the son of Homer and Shari Althouse of Salem and will study human resource management at Youngstown State University. Hahlen is the daughter of Adam and Kelly Hahlen of Salem. She will attend Cleveland State University to study speech and hearing technology.Kelly is the son of Michael and Julee Kelly of Lisbon and will study engineering at The Ohio State University.
James Rhodes presented the $500 Paul Gipp Memorial Scholarship, in memory of his father-in-law, to Bernet.
Ann Hall presented a $300 education scholarship, from the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, to Courtney Cooper. She is the daughter of Douglas and Rebecca Cooper of Hanoverton and will study early childhood education at the University of Mount Union.
Vinson Ward presented the Sandy Valley Masonic Lodge scholarships of $500 to Austin Beckett and Camryn Jarrett. Beckett is the son of William and Barbara Beckett of Salem and will study HVACR technology at Stark State College. Jarrett is the daughter of Randy and Andrea Jarrett of Salem. She will major in physical therapy at YSU.
Members of the Walbrown family presented the Boyd Wallbrown Jr. Memorial Agricultural Innovation Scholarship of $1,250 to Bernet.
Tom Young and Rinto presented the United Community Scholarship Foundation Academic awards with $1500 presented to Hannah Richey, daughter of Thomas and Caron Richey of Hanoverton. She will attend The Ohio State University to study nursing. Two $1,250 scholarships were presented to Anna Paterson and Destini Thompson. Paterson, daughter of Jeff and Shirley Paterson, will study exercise physiology at West Liberty University. Thompson, daughter of John and Jen Balint of Kensington, plans to study data forensics at Mount Union. Four $1,000 awards were presented to Emily Crawford, Mitchell Kelly, Sydney Marra and Jasmine Peuterbaugh and a $500 award to Daniel Shepard. Crawford, daughter of Scott and Dawn Crawford of Salem, will study education at YSU. Marra, daughter of Justin and Stacy Marra of Salem, will study speech and hearing sciences at The Ohio State University. Peuterbaugh, daughter of John Peuterbaugh of Hanoverton and Michelle Reeder, will study American sign language interpreting at KSU. Shepard, son of Michael and Laura Shepard of Salem, will study business administration at Grove City College.
Austin Beckett and Bernet received Gibson Memorial Vocational Scholarships of $500. Their presentation continued with awarding $500 “We Believe in You” scholarships to Molly Briceland, Autumn Hawkins, Erica Jensen, Brian Lippiatt Jr., Grace Marsocher, Jessika Owen, Dustin Sanor, Cassidy Varagliotti and one representing the Hanoverton Ruritans to Bernet. Briceland, daughter of Jerry and Jodi Briceland of Salem, will study at Ashland University. Hawkins, daughter of Andrew Hawkins of Salem and Jessica Grindle, will study social work at KSU. Lippiatt will study sports management at Ashland University. He is the son of Brian and Missy Lippiatt of Salem. Marsocher , daughter of Victor and Sherrie Maroscher of Salem, will major in marketing communication at California Lutheran University. Owen, daughter of Heidi Cotton of Kensington, will study sociology at La Roche College. Sanor, son of Eric and Michelle Sanor of East Rochester, will study finance at Mount Union. Varagliotti , daughter of Richard and Karrie Varagliotti of Hanoverton, will study graphic design at the University of Akron.
Rinto presented Althouse with a $2,000 Conrad Rinto Memorial Scholarship in memory of her late husband.
Pam Herron of the Columbiana County Buckeye Dairy Boosters presented a $1,000 scholarship to Courtney Cooper.
Danielle Matos presented two $1,000 scholarships in memory of her brother, Robert Garrett, to Bernet and Ryan Skiba. He is the son of Tracy Skiba of East Rochester and the late Wayne Skiba.
Sarah Jones of the United Youth Soccer Association presented three $500 scholarships to Molly Briceland, Tori Hahlen and Jonathan Logan. Logan, son of Sean and Melissa Logan of Lisbon, will study physics at the College of Wooster.
Joan Thomas of the Alliance Community Hospital Auxiliary presented the $1,,500 Dr. James J. Thomas Scholarship to Hannah Richey.
Megan Drake, president of the United Future Farmers of America Chapter, presented the FFA Scholarship of $1,000 to Courtney Cooper.
Brett Baker of the United Young Farmers presented a $200 scholarship to Becky Bernet.
The Columbiana County Federation of Conservation Clubs Scholarship of $1,000 was presented by a member of the club, to Becky Bernet.
Keith Martig presented a $1,500 Darren Fisher Memorial Scholarship to Molly Ellyson. She is the daughter of Eric and Kristen Ellyson of Kensington and will study social work at Malone University.
Muniz then presented the United Eagle Awards, given by an anonymous donor. One $1,000 award to Dakota Hill and eight awards of $500 to Adrianna Bates, Megan Brewer, Makenzie Clemens, Mollieann Fox, Autumn Hawkins, Jenna Martin, Cameron Pierson and Cassidy Varagliotti. Hill, son of Robert and Jennifer Hill of Kensington, will study accounting at Westminster College. Bates, daughter of Steven and Jennifer Bates of Salem, will study music education at YSU. Brewer, daughter of Heather Smith of Hanoverton and Richard Brewer, will attend Walsh University to study psychology. Clemens, daughter of Deidre Mitchell of Lisbon and Glen Wickersham, will study childhood education at the University of Akron. Martin, daughter of Bryan and Tina Martin of Lisbon, will study fashion design at Bowling Green State University. Pierson, daughter of Jason and Tricia Pierson of Salem, will pursue a major in pre-medicine at Mount Union.
Muniz presented two $1,000 scholarships from the Columbiana County School Employees Credit Union to Becky Bernet and Courtney Cooper. She then presented the United Education Association Scholarships to four students. Emily Crawford and Mollieann Fox received the two $250 education scholarships that are renewable for four years. Daniel Shepard and Cassidy Varagliotti received $250 scholarships.
Muniz presented the Hicks and Hayseeds 4-H Club Scholarship of $300 to Courtney Cooper.
Roberta Moats and Barb Beckett, officers of the United Band Boosters, presented Band Booster Book Scholarships of $100 to Adrianna Bates, Austin Beckett, Molly Briceland, Emily Crawford, Christina Moats and Daniel Shepard. Moats, daughter of Rodney and Roberta Moats of Kensington, will attend Stark State College to study criminal justice.
United Athletic Booster Scholarships of $1,000 were presented to Molly Briceland and Brian Lippiatt.
Noleen Moore presented United Key Club Book Scholarships of $100 to Adrianna Bates, Paige Fillman, Mollieann Fox, Autumn Hawkins and Dakota Hill. Fillman, daughter of Travis and Carie Fillman of Kensington, will study at KSU Tuscarawas campus to become a veterinary technician.
Betty Whiteleather presented United Ruriteen Scholarships of $500 to Becky Bernet, Paige Fillman, Mollieann Fox, Autumn Hawkins, Kiel Jones and Destini Thompson. She presented $250 Ruriteen Scholarships to Jakob Althouse, Emily Crawford, Tyler Humphrey, Sydney Marra and Anna Paterson. Jones, son of Jackie and Kristen Jones of East Rochester, has joined the Marine Corp. Humphrey, son of Mark and Sally Humphrey of Hanoverton, will major in business at KSU.
Whiteleather presented United Student Council Scholarships of $500 to Megan Brewer, Paige Fillman, Tyler Humphrey, Jonathan Logan and Christina Moats. She also presented $250 scholarships to Makenzie Clemens, Brian Lippiatt, Grace Maroscher, Jenna Martin and Samantha Moschgat.
