Expressing support for Salem Schools

To the editor: We write today to voice our immense support for the City of Salem, Salem City Schools, and the proposed new K-8 building. We are proud Quakers: alumni, parents, educators, business owners, and community servants. We have worked closely with the great leaders from across our ...

May is Preservation Month – Vote!

To the editor and Salem voters: Salem Preservation was created 30 years ago after we were at risk of losing historic homes that could be saved. Schools have become an endangered species of their own. The National Trust for Historic Preservation brought attention to this issue in 2000 by naming Neighborhood Schools to the America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places list. The issue of aging schools needing to be adapted to current standards is a nationwide problem. There are good arguments to made for and against creating newer and bigger school buildings. Most recent local ...

We must protect our ballot initiative

To the editor: Do you want the freedom to make decisions that affect your life and improve your community? Ohio voters have had that right since 1912 by using ballot initiatives to exercise that freedom. Now, lobbyists, special interests, and extremist politicians in the Ohio Statehouse want to take this power away from citizens. House Joint Resolution 1 (HJR1) is a blatant political power grab in an attempt to secure more power and control for themselves and less power for voters to decide on issues that matter most. We must protect our ballot initiative process and make it easier ...

Opposed to Salem Schools levy

To the editor: I am writing in response to the Salem Board of Education asking the voters of Salem to pass a levy on our property taxes for the construction of a new K-8 school. I have always been a proud supporter of Salem schools. However, I will not be voting for this levy. I agree with Karen Carter that there are too many unanswered questions before the citizens of Salem accept another increase to our property taxes. Are they tearing down these historical buildings or are they repurposing them? Where will it be built? They moved 7th and 8th grade students out of the junior ...

A message for Speaker of the House McCarthy

To the editor: (Sent to Honorable Kevin McCarthy, Speaker of the United States House of Representative, Washington DC) What a your waiting for? With a plurality in the House, what are you waiting for? A few suggestions and where actions are needed NOW: What a your waiting for? Impeach Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security. The charge? Invasion of the United States of America. (See Article 1, Section 9, paragraph 2 of the Constitution of the United States). With a border patrol estimate of 4.4 million invaders over two years, is there any question about the USA being ...

Grafton resident apologizes to EP residents

To the editor: To the residents of East Palestine, I would like to apologize in advance for any protesters in Grafton who are against the hauling in of hazardous waste from the train wreck. We have a state-of-the-art facility here and have been doing this for a half-a-century. There is always a group of whiners in any situation and we have our share. I speak for most Ohioans when I say to ignore these people. This disaster affects us all and everyone wants to pitch in and get you guys straightened out. So bring as much material up here as you need to —we can take care of ...
