Clippers suffer shock upset in sectional

COLUMBIANA — The Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference champion Columbiana Clippers could not withstand the physical play of Waynedale and bowed out of the Div. VI, Northeast 3 sectional tournament with a 40-35 overtime loss on Saturday.

Columbiana, the fourth seed in the tournament, finished the season 22-1. Waynedale is 12-11 and finished fifth in the Wayne County Athletic League this season.

The Bears, the 15th seed, will travel to No. 9 seed Springfield for Tuesday’s district semifinal. No. 8 seed Canton Central Catholic and No. 5 seed Mineral Ridge are the other teams left in the district.

Waynedale led 18-2 at the end of the first quarter and 27-12 at halftime. The Clippers made some adjustments at the break and pulled within five at the end of the third quarter.

Columbiana took the lead with 2:01 to play when Ellie Venezia converted a three-point play to make it 31-30. Waynedale managed to knot things up at 32 to send it to overtime.

In the overtime, Waynedale scored 30 seconds in on an Audrey Troyer three. The Bears dominated possession the rest of the way and converted five more free throws to put it out of reach.

Natalie Clever led the winners with 17 points.

For Columbiana, Annah Clemmer had 10 points while Evy Rapp added nine points. Megan Moser chipped in seven points.

Columbiana was just 6 of 23 from the free throw stripe.

Crestview 70, Liberty 6

COLUMBIANA — Addison Rhodes has done it all for the Crestview girls basketball team and along the way she is moving up the charts in the school’s record books.

On Saturday in a Div. V, Northeast 3 sectional opener, Rhodes broke Chelsea Bowker’s single-season scoring mark in a 70-6 win over Liberty.

Rhodes scored 28 in the win and now has 598 points on the season. Bowker held the old mark of 581. Rhodes has 1,633 career points in three seasons.

No. 1 seed Crestview will host No. 17 seed Fairview on Tuesday in the district semifinal. Fairview scored a 50-48 upset win over No. 13 seed Poland on Saturday.

Crestview has won 14 straight and is 20-3 on the season. Liberty ended the season 1-21.

Myer Miller aided the Rebels with 15 points. Luvrain Gaskins added 10 points.

SALEM — Salem’s girls basketball team will get another chance at rival West Branch after a 56-34 win over Struthers on Saturday in a Div. IV sectional game.

Reese Davidson-Chuck led the way with 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals for Salem. Abby Knickerbocker had 14 points and five rebounds. Karlie Sampson had five points and four steals.

No. 22 seed Salem (11-12) will travel to No. 6 seed West Branch on Tuesday for a Northeast 3 district semifinal contest. No. 10 seed Keystone and No. 9 seed Perry are squaring off in the other district semifinal.

West Branch (21-2) arrived in the district semifinal after Cleveland East Tech forfeited.

The Warriors beat Salem 34-24 and 36-32 in two competitive regular season games.

COLUMBIANA — Heartland Christian’s girls basketball team advanced to the district tournament for the first time in school history with a 42-36 win over Valley Christian on Saturday in a Northeast 3, Div. VII sectional contest.

The No. 10 seed Lions will play at No. 3 seed Cornerstone Christian on Tuesday in the district semifinal. Southington and Western Reserve are the other teams left in the district.

For Heartland (13-10), Sarah Reynolds had 18 points, while Emily McDowell added 10 points.

This is the second straight year Heartland’s girls basketball team has had a winning record.

SALINEVILLE — No. 19 seed Southern Local topped No. 26 seed Medina Christian 62-17 on Saturday in a Northeast 4, Div. VII contest.

Allyssa Shroades led the Indians with 19 points, 11 steals, six assists and two rebounds. Makenna Jones had 17 points and six rebounds. Maddy Jones had eight points and five rebounds. Addy Martin had eight points.

Southern will travel to No. 2 seed Smithville on Tuesday in the district semifinal.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 13 seed Mapleton will travel to No. 10 seed Loudonville.

Southern is 14-9, while Medina Christian ended its season at 10-10.

WELLSVILLE — Bella Poppelriter had 23 points as Wellsville turned back Sebring 38-30 on Sunday in a Northeast 2, Div. VII sectional contest.

The game was postponed on Saturday due to weather concerns.

Wellsville, the 12th seed, will play at No. 4 seed Maplewood on Tuesday.

The Tigers are 12-11, while Sebring is 8-14.

No. 2 seed Mogadore will host No. 6 seed Kidron Central Christian on the other side of the bracket.

Dalton 73,

East Palestine 8

DALTON — East Palestine’s girls basketball team bowed out of the Div. VI Northeast 2 sectional tournament with a 73-8 loss to Dalton on Saturday.

East Palestine ends its season at 5-18, while Dalton moves to 13-10.

Dalton, the 14th seed, will be at Columbia Station Columbia, the sixth seed, on Tuesday.

Richmond Heights and Wellington are the other district teams left in the tournament.

Warren JFK 78,

Leetonia 12

WARREN — Top-seed Warren JFK made short work of Leetonia with a 78-12 victory over the Bears on Saturday in a Div. VII, Northeast 1 sectional contest.

Leetonia finished the season

JFK (15-6) will host No. 19 seed Mathews on Tuesday in the district semifinal. No. 9 Lowellville and No. 7 Middlefield Cardinal will square off in the other district semifinal.

Leetonia fell to 1-19.

Mathews 55, Lisbon 43

LISBON — Lisbon’s girls basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 55-43 loss to Mathews on Saturday in a Northeast 3, Div. VII sectional game.

Rilee Paddock led the Mustangs with 22 points, while Jayden Smyth had 12 points for the No. 14 seed Blue Devils, 6-16.

No. 19 Mathews (6-17) will travel to No. 1 seed Warren JFK on Tuesday in a district contest. Middlefield Cardinal will host Lowellville in the other district semifinal.
