Quakers get on the road to regionals

AUSTINTOWN — They may have taken the district track meet out of Salem, but they can’t take away the Quakers’ winning ways. The Salem girls and boys combined for five district champions and eight more regional qualifiers at the Austintown Fitch Division III district meet Thursday. BELOIT — Carter Thrasher was walked with bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the seventh to drive in Grady Close as West Branch edged Pepper Pike Orange 1-0 in a Div. IV sectional baseball game on Thursday. Carson Wike had two of West Branch's five hits. Jeremiah Thomas was strong with eight strikeouts and two walks over seven innings. ANDOVER — Southern senior Maddy Jones and United sophomore Taylor Simmons are aiming for more than a district championship. Both won events at the Pymatuning Valley Division IV district track and field meet Wednesday. Jones — who qualified for state in the shot put and discus last year and in the discus as a freshman — won the district shot put title with a toss of 37-feet-1 on her first attempt.
