Leetonia income tax increase goes down

LEETONIA— Leetonia voters denied a proposed 0.5% increase in village income tax for safety forces and the village general fund in Tuesday’s Primary Election. According to final but unofficial results, the proposed increase failed by a vote of 192 (62.95%) against and 113 (37.05%) in favor. Leetonia currently collects income tax at a rate of 1.5% which collects approximately $1.1 million annually. Damages hearing set in Heggy’s suit

Staff Writer LISBON — A judge scheduled a damages hearing at 11:30 a.m. June 5 for the default judgment issued in favor of Heggy’s in Salem against the contractor who caused damage to the restaurant while demolishing the former Schory building in downtown Salem in 2024. Woman continues appeals of sex-for-hire conviction

LISBON — A woman convicted in a sex-for-hire sting in 2024 filed another appeal trying to challenge her case, this time appealing the denial of her request for post-conviction relief. Shanika Simmons, 42, whose address was listed as the prison in Marysville, filed the handwritten document herself with the Seventh District Court of Appeals to appeal the March 27 judgment issued by Columbiana County Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Washam. Salem emergency crews rescue man trapped under tree

SALEM, (WKBN) — Crews from Salem police and fire departments rescued a man Monday who was trapped after a tree fell on him while he was operating a tractor. Emergency crews were called to the 2400 block of Edgewood Drive shortly before noon on Monday for a medical call stating a tree had fallen and pinned a man on a tractor. Salem fire Chief Scott Mason said it appeared the man was operating a tractor with a front-end loader to push a tree into a tree line when part of the tree snapped, pinning the man between the tree and the roll bar/seat area.
