MLB player rep resigns TAMPA, Fla. WELLSVILLE — Shawn Carter, the quarterback on Wellsville’s 1994 Division V state runner-up team, is taking over as the Tigers’ new head football coach. Carter, who works as a chef at Franciscan University in Steubenville, is expected to be officially named at Monday’s board of education meeting. A 1995 graduate and a member of the Wellsville Athletic Hall of Fame, Carter has extensive coaching experience at Wellsville. SALEM — Salem athletic director Matt Freeman said the school district was caught off guard when it found out that Carrollton, Minerva and Marlington were leaving the Eastern Buckeye Conference for a new league. Like West Branch, Salem heard rumors of the league’s probable demise a week before the official announcement came on Friday. “It seems like it’s no longer about geography or size of the school,” Freeman said. OAKWOOD — Salem’s boys and girls bowling team competed at the Div. I sectional tournament on Sunday at Roseland Lanes. Both Quaker teams finished 10th. The Quakers girls totaled 2,593 while the boys had 3,240. Girls district team qualifiers were Nordonia (3,261), Streetsboro (3,214) and Austintown Fitch (3,162). Salem’s top girl bowler was Brooklyn Herold who took 11th (485). HANOVERTON — Valley Christian scored a 32-25 win over United in a low scoring boys basketball contest on Monday.
